Are you hunting for the best car insurance company? If you drive, you probably want affordable auto insurance with great rates. The best company gives you the most bang for your buck. What does that actually mean? You need enough coverage to protect yourself and others when accidents happen.

When researchers study cheap car insurance options, Geico consistently offers some of the best rates. This Berkshire Hathaway company earned AM Best’s top credit rating and holds 12.2% of the U.S. market share, making it the second-largest insurer according to the Insurance Information Institute. Multiple customer surveys have ranked Geico as the top car insurance company at least five times. I looked at ratings from five different survey websites to put together these rankings based on actual customer satisfaction scores.
These customer ratings show you where companies really stand. I narrowed down the list to focus on companies that consistently earned top marks. Using online research, I identified insurers with the best customer feedback and highest insurance scores. The rating system goes from one to five stars, so you can see how companies stack up from best to worst.
My internet search revealed only two companies that cracked the top rankings among all vehicle insurance providers. Geico made the list at number 13. This well-known company offers competitive rates, and their website shows excellent ratings from drivers who bought policies and love the service they get.
USAA was the other company that made my best car insurance rankings. Out of the five companies I researched, USAA was the only one with perfect ratings from both customers and the rating site. USAA has operated since 1941 and was long considered one of the top car insurance providers. Their website shows great ratings from customers and rating sites alike. USAA now contracts with Progressive, though their website doesn’t mention any plans to relocate their headquarters to Florida. Progressive’s website says they’re still “headquartered in Columbus, Georgia, which has always been their home state.”
Based on what I found, USAA might be your best bet if you want minimal paperwork hassles. But that doesn’t automatically make them perfect for your situation. You should still check out each company on my list to see which one gives you the most value. All these companies earned good rankings because they offer solid coverage levels, but they’re not all equal. For a fair comparison, check out some Progressive Insurance Reviews.
GEICO and USAA just missed the top five spots. GEICO offered the least total coverage in their policies, but their premiums were lower than USAA’s. If you add up what you’d save with GEICO’s cheaper premiums versus USAA’s higher rates, you might pocket a few hundred dollars yearly. That savings alone could make GEICO your best choice when shopping for car insurance coverage.
The last two companies I’ll cover are Progressive and AIG. Progressive ranked highest on my list, but their low premiums and affordable coverage might leave you wondering if you’re getting what you pay for. AIG also made my best car insurance list thanks to a low claims ratio and excellent safety record, but their claims ratio runs much higher than the other two. When you realize you could save hundreds each year by choosing one of the top two companies while paying just a fraction of total premiums, the high cost of some auto insurance policies starts looking like an unnecessary expense.
