MOL seals deal on 20,000 teu containership fleet

Mitsui O.S.K has signed a contract with Samsung Heavy Industries for the construction of four 20,000 two containerships. The deal comes as the company concludes an MOU for the long-term chartering of two 20,000 teu containerships with Shoei Kisen Kaisha.

Among vessels delivered and on order, the 20,000 teu is the world’s largest and the containerships are expected to adopt various high spec energy saving technologies which will allow for savings in fuel consumption and cost. MOL states that in comparison with the 14,000 teu types they currently operate, the mega ships will have main engines that allow them to use LNG as a fuel in the future.

All six vessels are expected to be delivered and launched in 2017. MOL states that they will be serving the Asia-Europe service.
