The United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has purchased 2,000 new reefer units from Daikin.
The container shipping line says the order marks the first milestone in the expansion of the company’s ongoing investment in energy efficient solutions for the transportation of chilled cargo.
Each container is fitted with Daikin’s LXE 10E model reefer uint which allows for the optimum temperature environment and airflow for chilled cargo. The hardware and software developments allow for a 50 percent reduction in power consumption compared to early models.
UASC’s reefer fleet is one of the youngest in the shipping industry, with the average container age standing at around three years.
“The progressive expansion of UASC’s fleet of refrigerated units ensures enhanced reefer availability for al our customers. We are committed to driving down costs, optimising networks and continuously improving the services that we offer,” said Gareth Madsen, head of reefer management at the company.
“UASC will be placing more orders of reefer units this year. More details will be released once plans are finalised. In terms of quality, performance and reliability, Daikin’s latest reefer units set the industry benchmark. In addition, it fits UASC’s overarching commitment to investment in eco-efficiency and environmentally responsible operations, which we believe is good for our business, good for our customers and good for our planet."
The announcement follows the news that UASC has had three 15,000 teu vessels delivered as part of its current newbuilding program, as well as its latest cooperations with leading liner shipping companies CMA CGM and China Shipping Container Lines.
