Nordic American Tankers closes first newbuilding order in four years

Nordic American Tankers (NAT) has confirmed a deal with Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for two newbuilds.

The vessels are the first to be ordered by the New York-listed company for over four years.

The tankers will cost $65 million each and will take the company’s fleet to 24 suezmaxes.

According to NAT, the newbuilds will be financed by “internal resources”.

The suezmax tankers are scheduled for delivery in the third quarter 2016 and first quarter 2017.
