Nordic American Tankers has ordered two new suezmax vessels from Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering.

According to the Herbjorn Hansson-owned company, the 158,000 dwt vessels are worth $65 million each.

In a statement Hansson said the newbuilds were an “important step forward for Nordic American.”

"By adding two more ships, we increase the dividend capacity and bolster our earnings potential.

“We believe that our solid balance sheet as well as our well-defined and transparent operating model are elements supporting the competitive position of the company.”

The new ships are scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of 2017.

NAT is joining the growing list of shipping companies to place suezmax orders this year. Wilbur Ross, John Angelicoussis and John Fredriksen all have newbuilds on order.
